July 31, 2006Toyota spent decades building their bulletproof image for reliability. Now they've had a spat of recent recalls, and there are now signs this run of bad luck is starting to put a dent in their gold-standard image.
Snippet: "I take this seriously and see it as a crisis," Watanabe said at the company's midyear news conference. "The world-class quality that we've achieved is our lifeline."
I agree. I'm convinced the main reason for Toyota's success has been their reputation for reliability (as certainly it couldn't be their styling). When push-comes-to-shove, most customers just want to know that whatever they buy, that it won't break. In the past Toyota delivered on that promise in spades. Now a few customers may not be so sure. Could this be the start of a new trend—a trend that Toyota has every reason to fear?
