August 7, 2006Reuters - Toyota Motor Corp.s shares climbed in early Monday trade after the auto makers first-quarter profit beat expectations on surging sales and it said it aimed to beat its official forecasts for the full year.

No surprise that Toyota had a great 2nd-quarter, but a 39% rise in profits is somewhat of a surprise.
Snippet: Toyota has been helped by consumers moving from the big pickups and SUVs emphasized by Ford and GM toward more fuel-efficient vehicles, said Erich Merkle, an auto analyst for Grand Rapids-based IRN Inc.
Snippet: Toyota has stumbled this year with a series of recalls, including one that affected more than 1 million vehicles worldwide. So far, the recalls have not affected sales. Toyota's worldwide sales increased 7% in the most recent quarter to 2.09 million vehicles.
